About Pastor Ed: The man, the call and his Passion

The Man,

Being the last born to a family with 7 siblings, Ed Mazhangara had nothing in his childhood that would suggest that God would one day use him.  He was born in Harare, Zimbabwe to Weston and Suzanne Mazhangara (both now late) and then moved with his mother and siblings to Hwedza in rural Zimbabwe. He spent 14 years in Hwedza where he grew up and did his primary schooling before moving to Harare for secondary schooling.  In 1985, while attending school at Highfield High School, his elder sister invited him to a Pentecostal church called Family of God Church.  Ed procrastinated about going to church, but his sister told him that she had a pretty friend who might be interested in meeting him – the price became right.  Ed went to church that Sunday and instead, got a clear presentation of the Gospel of Jesus Christ that led him to a glorious salvation.  Ed’s life turned from sin to sincere hunger and pursuit of God.  He won his uncle Regis to Christ and the two set out to pursue God.  One day Ed prayed for Reggie to be filled with the Holy Ghost while they were standing by the gate to his house in Glen Norah A suburb and heaven responded setting an even deeper hunger in him to worship the Lord.

On another day Reggie and Ed played a Christian song on a stereo and began worshipping God at Ed’s house. The presence of God became intense and a hand reached out and touched Ed on his chest sending an electric wave down his body.  The experience startled Ed, who opened his eyes so he could tell Reggie not to seek up and touch him like that ever again.  Upon seeing Reggie at the far corner of the house, Ed got up and ran out of the house terrified out of his wits, asking – Who touched me in there?

As Ed continued to grow in the Lord, one day he prayed. “Lord, coca-cola is everywhere but in Hwedza, in the church where I grew up you are not there and your power is not evident, why?”  This ignited a passion to believe God, that one day Ed would preach in that church.  Young in the Lord as he was, and a teenager for that matter, Ed went and preached at the mission school church and heaven responded that day. Almost the whole church responded to the salvation alter call and many people got healed of diverse diseases and witchcraft curses.    From that day Ed believed God would soon call him into the ministry, but that did not happen. He watched others getting God’s call into ministry but not him. Ed eventually concluded that GOD wanted him to be a layman in the church. He served God as best as he could as a layperson.

Ed attended college at the University of Zimbabwe, and then worked in Chiredzi, Zimbabwe. In 1991 he got a scholarship to go and pursue a Masters Degree at Purdue University, in Indiana, USA. In 1993 he went back to Zimbabwe married his sweat-heart Tendisai and started a family, all the time serving the Lord fervently in all capacities from cell group leader, worship leader, band leader, men’s group leader, usher, deacon and lay preacher.   In 1998 he got another scholarship to attend Michigan State University to pursue a PhD and came with his family to Lansing, Michigan. USA.  In 2001, he went to Malawi to do his dissertation fieldwork – it was there that his life was forever changed.

The Call

While pursuing his fieldwork in Malawi, Ed found himself in a difficult funding situation for his data collection when his promised research funds did not materialize. That sent him into intense search for a miracle breakthrough for financing.  Ed would wake up at 2.00am and read his bible for an hour and pray till sunrise.  With his research grounded to a halt, one afternoon Ed took a long-walk to go pray outdoors one last time.  On his way back home, he was convinced that there was no way out but to give up the pursuit of his PhD and switch to a plan B career. Talking out his plans aloud, Ed was startled when the Lord talked back to him with an audible voice. From that day he knew his life would take a new turn.

Ed started a cell group in Lilongwe, which grew rapidly – leading to the planting of Lilongwe Family of God Church that is still going strong in Malawi.  After that Ed received prophetic words from several men and women of God in Malawi, Zimbabwe, and USA, all of them confirming what God had said about the nature of God’s call on his life as an Evangelist and Pastor.   A miraculous funding breakthrough enabled Ed to obtain some partial funding to finish his dissertation fieldwork and return to Michigan State University.  Upon returning to USA to finish his PhD, Ed felt led by the Holy Spirit to go to Bible School. He took a hiatus from school and went to Bible School full-time for 2 years and then returned back to finish his PhD.

His Passion

While in bible school, the Lord instructed Pastor Ed to divide the globe into 4 regions – The Region of America; Euro-Africa; Asia and The Far East because his ministry would touch these regions in the coming years.  A week before attending a Church Planter’s School in St. Pete’s Beach, Florida the Lord asked Ed to raise a gathering where nations of the world would gather and worship Him under one roof.  From that moment God birthed a passion in Ed to raise an international ministry that would bring many people from the nations together for an international worship experience in Michigan.  As an Evangelist, Ed travels within the US and abroad to preach the gospel to the lost and encourage ministers and ministries on the frontlines.
